I was taught that the way of progress was neither swift nor easy. - Marie Curie, Nobel Prize in Physics (1903) and Chemistry (1911)

WiSTEM Society was founded in September 2020 and our aim is to support, help and encourage women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at the University of Galway to achieve their full potential.

We aim to be a part of a growing movement which increases the accessibility of  STEM subjects to the next generation, and to make STEM more diverse by creating an accepting environment to work and excel. With this aim comes goals to help the women of STEM in the University of Galway build the skills they need to succeed and find role models, internships and connections in their particular industry.

This year, we facilitated the Johnson & Johnson WISTEM2D Bursary Programme with J&J Cerenovus in Galway to offer 10 bursaries to women in STEM in the University of Galway. We also facilitated the iTAG Student/Industry Engagement Coaching Programme for Women in Computer Science and Technology here at our University. Both these programmes offer mentorship and support to Women in STEM in our community and have had great success. This year we also supported students academically by bringing some guest speakers to the university, talking about their specific research or discussing opportunities for students after their degree.

This year we also facilitated many social events to bring Women in STEM closer together after the pandemic. We supported student networking by hosting this year's Science Ball, and we also held a Halloween Mixology Course! This year we also supported the National Breast Cancer Research Institute by raising over €1000 during our Nuts & Bolts Quiz with Engineers Ireland.

We have something for everyone here at WiSTEM!
