Cell EXPLORERS is hosting an 'Inclusivity in STEM engagement' training program with their collaborators from Vienna University Children's Office.  

• What is it?  

A practical hands-on training on how to plan, run and deliver socially inclusive public engagement activities in science to empower children from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds or minorities in participating in science.  

•  Who can attend?  

Anyone with an interest in science communication, public engagement and minorities. No experience is required.

•  Who delivers it?  

Science communication expert Philipp Breitenberger from Vienna University Children’s Office. For almost 15 years, this Austrian not for profit organization has been developing specific communication techniques and strategies which aim to empower children from minorities in participating in science. 

•  Can you tell me more about the workshop?  

This science communication- workshop is based on the long-term experience of the project Children’s University on Tour, which is a flagship-project in terms of social inclusion in both Austria and Europe. Within this outreach program, scientific activities are embedded in social environments (such as public parks or youth centers) of socio-economically deprived groups. 

A low-threshold approach has been developed aiming to empower participants to take into account their respective competencies. Activities meet the interests and needs of the young people participating and enable them to engage in scientific processes. At the workshop session, workshop attendees will not only get to know those strategies from an organizational and theoretical perspectives, but also get involved with hands-on-experiments themselves. 

• Duration:  3 hours  - including a 20 min break

• When: Two identical sessions will take place. You can attend March 11th from 1-4pm OR March 12th from 10-1pm in THB-G010 Moore Institute Seminar Room, Hardiman Library
