Equitable Education in Science: why it matters, what it entails, and how it might be achieved

In this seminar, Professor King will draw on experiences in social justice-based pedagogy and additional work on responses to the global socio-ecological crises to explore how educational practice can better support equity and agency. She will also introduce emerging research on embodied and emotional forms of teaching and learning that can help all learners develop a more rounded understanding of science and environmental concepts.
Biography:
Professor Heather King researches how educators foster engagement with science across formal and non-formal spaces including schools, museums, outdoor settings, and maker-spaces. Her work on social justice informed the development of the science capital teaching approaches, while her recent focus on climate change education has emphasised sustainable making and creating and advocacy for environmental justice in higher education practice.
She co-chairs the Science and Technology Education Research Group at King’s College London, where she teaches on STEM education and education in arts and cultural settings, and she is Vice President for Education at the British Science Association.
